PKR MP Hassan stands firm, ready for disciplinary action over hard-hitting views

KUALA LUMPUR: Pasir Gudang member of Parliament Hassan Abdul Karim is ready should PKR choose to expel or initiate disciplinary proceedings against him for expressing his views in various issues.

In a Facebook post, he said he is not afraid to defend his freedom to express his views, including his opinion that Umno needs a new face to lead the party.

He was responding to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil's statement earlier today, calling him to refrain from making comments that could "hurt" fellow component parties in the unity government.

"I approach the reprimand from YB Minister Fahmi Fadzil with positivity and an assumption of goodwill.

"With respect and humility, I am open and ready if PKR chooses to initiate disciplinary proceedings against me for my outspoken views.

"If defending my right to speak and express my thoughts is deemed an offence by the unity government, I am prepared for any potential expulsion action by the party leadership," he said, adding that he is not offended by Fahmi's rebuke.

He said this marks the first instance where he has faced a stern reprimand after being affiliated with the party for over 46 years, adding that it was made public on social media for sharing political thoughts and opinions.

Earlier this week, a local news portal reported Hassan calling for Umno to replace Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as it cannot afford to ride on Pakatan Harapan's "fragile" coat-tails in the next general election.

Hassan had said Umno needed a fresh leader with integrity and charisma to help Umno regain the support of the Malays, which is the key factor in Barisan Nasional (BN)'s dismal performance in recent elections.

Given the current situation, it would be tough for Umno to regain the support of the Malay voters for as long as Zahid remained as its president, he was reported as saying.

It is believed that Hassan made the remarks in response to Zahid's recent hint that the cooperation between BN and PH would continue beyond the 16th general election.
