New Kedah PKR chief to prioritise collective action over personalities to counter PN's dominance

ALOR STAR: Kedah PKR must not rely on personalities to challenge Perikatan Nasional's dominance in the state, as evidenced in the 15th General Election (GE15) in 2022 and the Aug 12 State Election last year.

Newly-minted Kedah PKR chairman Nurin Aina Surip stressed the pivotal role of collective responsibility as a team to regain support for the party in the next general election.

"To me, it's about shared accountability through teamwork. We must empower collective action. I believe this sense of togetherness can yield extraordinary outcomes. There's no 'I' in 'Team'," she told the New Straits Times when contacted.

In GE15, PKR only retained one parliamentary seat out of the total 15 in the state, through Dr Taufiq Johari's victory in Sungai Petani as PN almost achieved a clean sweep.

In the August state election, PKR only retained two states seats, with newcomers Bau Wong (Sidam) and Adam Loh Wei Chai (Bakar Arang) surviving PN's overwhelming victory of sweeping 33 out of 36 contested seats.

Experts and politicians from various sides described the election results in Kedah and other northern regions as a 'green wave' phenomenon favouring PN.

Commenting on the restructuring of PKR leadership in six states, Nurin said that the changes took into account all perspectives.

"To me, this is a matter of trust and responsibility. This arrangement has considered all viewpoints.

"It's a weighty task but must be borne to ensure the reform agenda continues to be supported under the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," she added.

Meanwhile, she urged PKR members to diligently prepare to strengthen the party's machinery at every level.

"We need to harness the strength of our youth and women and embrace diversity as a strength while providing structured training to members at every level to sustain our fight," she added.

Earlier, PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced the appointment of state PKR chiefs following the PKR leadership council meeting on Sunday.

It was reported that the restructuring considered all perspectives to ensure PKR remains strong in supporting the reform agenda under Anwar.

The restructuring exercise involved six states namely, Penang, Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Negri Sembilan and Melaka.
