Deejays, watch what you say on air, a child may be listening

DURING a talk show on a radio station recently, the deejays asked whether we should treat a hardworking colleague differently because of his or her infidelity.

They cited an example: the said person is being unfaithful by having an affair with a colleague's wife.

Private radio stations should be allowed to freely create content to entertain listeners.

However, deejays should be careful about discussing certain issues as children are among their listeners, too. The radio can be a big influence on the psychosocial development of a child.

Radio stations should promote topics that enhance human values. Those that can pollute young minds must be prohibited.

The young are facing many problems today due to the absence of human or moral values. It is important that radio stations do not worsen the situation.

The relevant ministry should look into the contents of talk shows and ask radio stations and deejays to broadcast appropriate programmes.

If necessary, issue warnings to the deejays and radio stations.

Alternatively, ratings can be assigned to talk shows. This will allow adults to control what their children hear.

Ultimately, radio stations and deejays must be accountable for what comes out on air.
