Mixed fortunes for shuttlers at Syed Modi International

KUALA LUMPUR: The Super 300 Syed Modi International got underway in Lucknow, India, with mixed fortunes for the Malaysian mixed doubles camp.

On Tuesday, newly crowned Malaysia International Challenge champions Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin checked into the second round of the competition, while seasoned campaigners Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See failed to clear the first hurdle.

World No. 175 Pang Ron-Su Yin, playing in only their third international tournament as pair, scored one of the biggest upsets when they dispatched top seeds and world No 13 Hiroki Midorikawa-Natsu Saito 21-11, 25-23 in the opening round.

The Malaysians will face either Nitin Kumar-Navdha Manglam or Kona Tarun-K. Sri Krishna Kudaravalli, both from India, in the second round on Thursday.

Meanwhile, independents Peng Soon-Yee See suffered a second first-round defeat in as many weeks, succumbing 21-12, 21-18 to homesters Rohan Kapoor-Ashwini Ponnapaa.

A fortnight ago, just after winning the Super 100 KL Masters, Peng Soon-Yee See were sent packing in the opening round of the Super 300 Korea Masters in Gwangju.

Rohan-Ashwini will play Japan's Yuki Kaneko-Misaki Matsutomo next.

The fifth seeded Japanese pair defeated another national pair, Choong Hon Jian-Go Pei Kee 21-17, 21-13 in the first round.

Malaysia's Yap Roy King-Valeree Siow, will face India's Shivam Sharma-Poorvisha S. Ram in the second half of first round matches on Wednesday.
