Ling Ching in last eight

LUCKNOW: Things are certainly looking up for national women's singles shuttler Wong Ling Ching at the moment.

Today, the 20-year-old achieved a new career high, reaching her maiden World Tour Super 300 quarter-final at the Syed Modi India International in Lucknow.

Ling Ching did it after beating India's A. Janani 21-15, 21-12.

The last time Ling Ching made it this far was during the Kaoshiung Masters in Taiwan, but that was a Super 100-level event.

Ling Ching has been making good strides of late, which saw her finish runner-up at the Malaysia International Challenge two weeks ago.

This augurs well for the national women's singles squad, currently helmed by former international K. Yogendran, which is in the midst of rebuilding the team from scratch.

Also through were the newly combined mixed pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, who are playing in their third tournament together and on the back of their Malaysia International Challenge triumph recently.

They were untroubled in their 21-13, 21-13 win over India's Nitri Kumar-Navdha Manglam as they extended their unbeaten run to seven matches.

However, Yap Roy King-Valeree Siow could not follow suit after they went down fighting 16-21, 21-17, 21-15 to the experienced Singapore duo Tan Wei Han-Terry Hee.
