Shafiq, Eain Yow refuse to give up

GOLD COAST: The combination of Muhamad Syafiq Kamal-Ng Eain Yow had to concede defeat to formidable English pair of Daryl Shelby- Adrian Waller who defeated the Malaysian pair, 4-11,8-11 in qualifying at Oxenford Studios here earlier today (Wednesday) in the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

“We went into the match with confidence and we were well prepared but Shelby and Waller showed just that they were the better pair thanks to their vast experience, which left us struggling and staring at defeat,” said Eain Yow.

“In the end, we did however manage to adapt and give them a fight where we managed to get some points off them.

“The positive that we can take back from the match is the fact that there is room for improvement, and despite the defeat, we are still in with a chance.”

Syafiq explained that they began rather shakily as they struggled to adapt with the match rhythm of their opponents in the first set.

“It was only in the second set that we were able to be more competitive but they were just too far ahead for us to catch up with and we ran out of luck.”

According to Eain Yow, the match against Uganda after this should allow them to keep up the chase provided they can overcome the Africans, as England have already qualified for the quarter-finals.

In women’s competition, Rachel Arnold-S. Sivasangari kept up their winning ways after humbling world champions JoelleKing-Amanda Murphy of New Zealand, by defeating Australian pair Sarah Cardwell-Christine Nunn, 10-11, 11-16, 11-16.

Meanwhile, national men’s pair Nafiizwan Adnan-Ivan Yuen came out victorious against New Zealanders Lance Beddoes-Evan Williams by overcoming them 11-9, 11-10.
