Eain Yow stuns World No 9 Mostafa in Giza

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's national No 1 Ng Eain Yow has once again stepped up in a huge way by producing yet another major upset to reach the third round of the Egyptian Open.

In a clash between generational talents, it was Eain Yow, the 2016 world junior champion who emerged victorious over Egypt's world No 9 Mostafa Asal - the 2018 and 2019 world junior champion.

The 23-year-old was in his element as he put up an imperious performance for an 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 win over Mostafa at the Giza Sporting Club on Saturday.

The Bristol-based Eain Yow had started strongly by taking the first game and appeared to be cruising in the second before Mostafa had an injury timeout.

The Egyptian, who has been on a roll since winning the World Tour Finals in June, looked to be forcing a fourth game after a more aggressive approach in the third game.

But Eain Yow kept his cool to claim his first Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour win over Mostafa after 50 minutes.

It is certainly a great result for the young Malaysian, who has been slowly but steadily making his way up the world rankings.

He is currently ranked a career high No 18 in the world.

It also proves that Eain Yow's win over former world champion and world No 6 Karim Abdel Gawad in the second round of the British Open was no fluke.

"I know that everyone believed Mostafa would be the winner as he has been playing his best squash in the past few month," said Eain Yow.

"But my team believed that I could do it, and the biggest difference this season is that I believe in myself more and I'm not afraid to play anyone.

"I think I surely did my job today. The main thing was to stay calm and play my squash and the result showed."

Eain Yow now goes on to meet Colombia's world No 11 Miguel Rodriguez, who downed Mexico's Arturo Salazar 11-8, 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, in the third round.

It will be a chance for Eain Yow to even the score against Rodriguez, having lost to the speedy Colombian in the third round of the British meet recently.

"The last time I played Miguel, we had a 100-minute match. This time I'm a little bit fresher so I'm definitely looking forward to it," added Eain Yow.
