KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak today launched the Royal Malaysian Police’s (PDRM) Smart Lock-Up which is on display at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) Exhibition and Conference 2016 at the Putra World Trade Centre here.
The prime minister arrived at the exhibition hall at 3.35 pm before spending 15 minutes listening to a briefing from PDRM Strategic Resources and Technology Department deputy director II SAC Sahabudin Abdul Manan and checking on the functions of the lockup before signing the launch plaque.
The Smart Lock-Up is a system designed by the PDRM with the cooperation from the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, and was developed by the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronics System (MIMOS).
For a start, the Smart Lock-Up will be built at Jinjang police station centralised lock-up, as a pilot project before being expanded to all police stations nationwide.
Jinjang Police Centralised Lock Up chief ASP Edmond Wong said the smart lock-up system had been installed since early February in all lock-up rooms on the first floor of the building.
“The feedback we received so far is good. We will install the system on all lock-up buildings in Jinjang next month,” he told Bernama.
He said the Smart Lock-Up system was able to detect any suspicious movement of detainees, including attempts to create commotion in lock-up.
“The Smart Lock-Up system is equipped with cameras which will record every movement of detainees, and if a suspicious act or movement is detected, the system will alert the officer on duty.
“This will help the police to take quick action to prevent any untoward incidents,” he said.
Wong said the system would also optimise the operational productivity in lock-up and ensure safety of detainees.
For the record, the system had also won the Asia-Pacific Enterprise Innovation Award 2015 (government category) last year.
