Japanese male cyclist killed in road accident

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A 52-year-old Japanese man died due to severe head injuries sustained in a crash between his bicycle and a car along Sultan Iskandar coastal highway on Sunday morning.

Shunsuke Kimura, a Japanese with Singapore citizenship who worked as general manager of a Japanese company in Singapore, died two days after he was admitted to the Sultanah Aminah hospital.

He fell on the road after the collision at KM5.5 near the Horizon Hill sliproad.

The victim, who was riding on a bicycle and trailing closely behind two other cycling partners, was knocked into by a Perodua Myvi driven by a 50-year old man who was making a turn into the sliproad.

According to Iskandar Puteri police chief assistant commissioner Noor Hashim Mohamad the crash happened when the victim make a sudden sharp turn to the left towards the road shoulders and was hit by the Myvi driver.

"The victim fell off his bicycle head first and he sustained head and bodily injuries while another cyclist who was right in front of the victim, also fell from his bicycle when parts of the Japanese cyclist's bicycle hit the back of his bicycle causing him to lost control and fall.

"The second victim had minor injuries. The third cyclist up front was unhurt as he was not involved in the crash," he said.

Noor Hashim said both injured cyclists were rushed to the Sultanah Aminah hospital but the Japanese victim died around 7.30am today.

"Police investigation on the case is still on and we have sent the remains of the Japanese man to the forensic unit for post mortem," he said.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving.
