PPBM youth exco wants Dr M, Mukhriz probed over multi-million ringgit project

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir must be investigated over alleged scandals linked to a multi-million-ringgit government project in 2003.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) Youth executive council member Mohamad Taufik Abas claimed there were cases of misappropriation of funds and abuse of power during party chairman Dr Mahathir's stint as prime minister and finance minister.

The former premier, he claimed, had in 2003 approved a tender directly to Opcom Sdn Bhd (owned by Mahathir's son Mukhriz, who is also PPBM deputy president) to supply fibre optic cables to Telekom Malaysia Bhd, worth RM214.4 million.

Taufik, who filed a report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the case today, urged the authorities to immediately act on the issue.

“I have submitted the necessary documents to MACC and hope their investigation into this will help clear the air and the party's name. It is obvious there is conflict of interest here.

“Both leaders have a responsibility to explain the issue to the public and PPBM grassroots members. Also, youngsters like us joined the party to fight for a fair and clean government.

“People like Mukhriz and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin have been championing freedom of speech, calling for transparency, oppose corrupt practices and supposedly want a clean party. This is exactly what I'm doing.

“We (PPBM top leaders and members) have to be 'clean' first before we attack others on issues of corruption or abuse of power.

“I do not care about one's background or position in the party. We will oppose anyone if it involves corruption or abuse of power," he told reporters at the MACC office here today.
