PKR confident of retaining Sungai Kandis: Selangor MB

SHAH ALAM: PKR has expressed confidence in defending the Sungai Kandis state seat based on the mood of the people and the party’s excellent record in the constituency.

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said he believes that the rakyat will place their trust in Pakatan Harapan candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, 48.

“We have fielded a candidate who is full of calibre. That is the recipe for PKR’s success. On top of that, we feel that there are no major issues that the opposition at the state or federal level can manipulate,” he said today.

Amirudin said this to reporters on the sidelines of the Sungai Kandis by-election nomination day process at Shah Alam City Council’s Dewan Teratai in Section 19.

He added that PKR is aiming to match the majority it obtained in the 14th general election (GE14) or exceed it – but the results will also depend on the percentage of those who go out to vote on Aug 4.

The Sungai Kandis state seat was declared vacant following the death of its three-term assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei who died of lymphoma on July 2.

In the GE14, Shuhaimi obtained 23,998 votes in the four-cornered fight, defeating Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Kamaruzzaman Johari (11,518), Pas’s Mohd Yusof Abdullah (7,573) and Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s (PRM) Hanafiah Husin (76).
