#NSTviral: Netizens praise UiTM VC's call to honour convocation robes as symbolic attire [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib has reminded graduates to respect their convocation robes as ceremonial attire that holds profound value.

In a TikTok video uploaded by @uitm_channel, he issued the reminder after seeing some graduates donning their robes while going about their daily lives such as cooking and doing chores for social media content.

He said although the graduates only intended to showcase their accomplishments, a feeling of respect must also be present.

"Respect must be present because these robes cannot be worn casually or recklessly by anyone. These robes are also worn by academics as a sign and emblem of the knowledge we uphold.

"Wearing the songkok or mortar-board (convocation cap) is, in a way, a representation of the knowledge conferred upon them.

"So, in line with that, I hope that all UiTM Malaysia students and graduates, both male and female, will respect this academic attire," he said in a 108-second video on UiTM's official TikTok account.

Previously, pictures and videos of graduates donning their convocation robes while engaging in business, doing household chores, and outdoor activities went viral on social media.

The reason given by the graduates was that it would be a loss to wear the robes only during the convocation ceremony.

However, some criticised this action, stating that it was excessive and disrespectful to the ceremonial attire.

Shahrin's video garnered over 25,000 likes and 700 comments with netizens saying that his advice is much-needed for graduates who have misused the robe.

"There are people who criticise that maybe the current generation thinks differently. Back in my day, I would cry when I got the robe. I took care of it in an orderly manner and wear (the robe) during the day of convocation," user @suhaila said.

"Correct. The robe is worn to show that we have succeeded in seeking knowledge in the university. Not everyone can obtain it. If the robe can be bought and worn anywhere, no need to study hard," user @zti08 said.
